We continued with our plans to find places nearby to visit and found a gem. At Donnington le Heath we discovered the “1620’s House.” It was a 40 minute drive to see a rare example of a family home built 700 years ago and modernised in 1618 with new windows, a roof and a fireplace.
The guided tours around the house and garden were excellent. Our two guides were very informative.
The garden has been recreated in 17th century style with flower beds, small herb garden, a maze and an orchard. We were told about the medicinal properties of the herbs and how they were used in cooking too.
The prize exhibit in the house is the four-poster bed where Richard 3rd was supposed to have slept on his way to Bosworth Field. We learned about old sayings and customs and the many ghost stories associated with the house.
There was also a welcome lunch between tours.
Ullesthorpe WI ladies were given a talk by Kirsty North,a personal trainer and health coach.
She gave us advice on positive ageing and staying active whilst growing old gracefully!!
There was lots of fun trying out weights, resistance bands and even boxing gloves.
